I am looking for a highend rifle for target shooting.  I am new to the smaller 22's, and I'd like to start out right.  Your opinions and experience is appreciated.

I cant comment on the 22lr. but my .17hmr anshutz shoots the lights out.  I have the model 54, came with bull barrel, excelent 2 stage trigger, and bottom rail.  I can easly get 3/4 MOA at 100.  Here is a pic at 200.  besides the wind drift, its a pretty tight vertical group.

A new batch of used Suhl 150's was just imported. They sold for $450 to $550. There has been some really good deals lately on Anschutz 54's on GB and www.simpsonltd.com

There has been an Annie 54 Silhouette on www.targettalk.org for the past few weeks. Comes with a extra prone stock and an Leupold 6.5 - 20 [ iirc ] for $1500 obo. It's over your budget except that the scope is probably worth $300 or $400 and you could sell which ever stock you didn't like for $200 to $300.

CMP recently had some Remington 40x's for about $450. If they have another batch you can't go wrong at that price.

I have a 64 MPR with top end Anschutz sights, and using Wolfe Match Extra ammo. It is my laser gun. I bought about 2 dozen brands & types of 22 LR, from match to high velocity to standard velocity, and shot them off the bench with a Leupold scope for accuracy testing at 50 meters. I was impressed to say the least.

The MPR is magazine fed so you can also use it to hunt with, though its a little heavy to be carrying for an extended period.

The trigger is fully adjustable and breaks like glass. The trigger bow is on a "rail" and you can move it forward & back to exactly fit you hand and trigger finger.

Anschutz & Gehmann make a gazillion accessories for the platform, including scope mounting rails to clamp on the receiver dovetail, and it will hold it zero when you remove it.

As shooter65 said, you can't go wrong here.

I also have an Anschutz 64 MPR. I bought this rifle used from Champion Shooters in Ohio for less than 500 dollars some years ago. In my opinion, you will not find a better shooting 22 LR. Trigger is fully adjustable, and also mine likes Wolf ammo. I believe these rifles can be had for less than 1000 dollars. It may be a bit on the heavy side, but I use it every fall for squirrels. I use standard velocity ammunition, and with a set of shooting sticks I am able to easily make head shots on bushy tails out to 50 yards. This is one fine rifle, that I will never think of parting with.

I highly recommend the Izhmash CM-2 rifl you can get from  MT guns.  it is a great rifle and my junior team used them to win a National Championship (club level) it is hard to beat for under $600, very accurate and comes with a pretty good sight, cleaning rod etc..  You did not montion sights but as you probably know the rifle is just the start!

You could spend $600 on this  rifle and sight at MT Guns http://www.mtguns.com/cm-2.htm and then $400 on match .22 ammo practice a lot and you will be good!

All of our Izmash's like Wolf Match Target for $400 you can get 4000-5000 rounds.

Also these rifles hold ther value great so when you shoot better than the rifle you can sell it for what you paid or a little less.

When i was in high school shot on the school rifle team with Rem.40X, after graduating needed a target rifle so purchased a Mossberg 144LS($100.00)  that shot very well after fitting the stock to me, latter purchased a Win 52D($400.00) from a man at the gun club also shoots very well.
So if you look around the deal's are out there.

they are made in Russia and are rock solid rifle, chekc out the Biathelon also it is neat.

They also hold there value really well as far as I can tell.

hi, try a cz 452 varmint, not expensive and very accurate. You'll just need to change the spring of the trigger.But nevertheless, a good carbine!
