.284 Winchester OAL 180 Bergers
« on: 05:58 AM, 02/07/10 »
Can somone please let me know what overall length you are using with the .284 and 180 bergers.
My barrel a 5R 1 in 9 32" Bartlein barrel has arrived and the gun smith has asked me for a dummy round to throat the barrel.
I want to keep the bullet out of the donut area, but how deep do you guys seat the Bergers upto this point.
If it helps my powder of choice will be H4831SC but will test with Reloader 17.
Please can you let me know your OAL to the bullet tip not ogive as compurators do vary.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Grant thanks for the info, good to see a fellow shooter from GB.
What charge of H4831SC are you using and what sort of velocities are you getting?
Hoping to have the gun up and running soon if Neil is not to busy.
Cheers

.245 freebore on a 284 Shehane.....010 into lands is 3.195...zero is 3.185 oal..

I cut a case neck 1/2 out so you could see the bullet seated from a side profile. With a freebore of .245-.250, you'll have .030 room to jam the bullet, plus an extra .020 to allow for throat growth/;wash, and still have plenty of bullet in the neck for neck tension....I feel that this is a go in between....I would NOT go with the .189 that Kiff recommands...He is a great guy, and knows his business, but I can tell you that myself, and a lot of other F-Class guys feel the .189 freebore is way to short. I used my reamer(.189) freebore, and had my gunsmith throat it out to the case that I sent him...

Good Luck...

Thats the plan Grant, need to get it up and running for the Imperial meet.
Wales need to do a bit better at the F class international on the final Friday.
I've joined the F class League, but I'm tempted to shoot F/TR class with my match rifle.
Want to put a theory to the test and see how I get on with heavier bullets.
My .308 will launch a 210 SMK with a BC of 6.4 at 2750 fps with 49.5 gn N550, its got to have an edge on 155's in the wind?
Can only get to do Bisley shoots this year sadly, as I have taken on more work commitments.
May catch up on the range.
Cheers
