270wsm...what gives!!!

A friend of mine has had a reamer cut by Pacific for a 6.5/270wsm of his own design. He is developing a rifle for F Class that he thinks will be a winner next Summer on the Canadian Army ranges.

So your beloved .270WSM may become the proud parent of a 1000 yard target winner. Time will tell.

here's a pic of last target i shot at. i shot 8times and this was jst a rough sight in to test standard primers. it was raining and i jst wanted to get it close enough to where i would be able to hit something with it. first one hit either way high or low. i can't remember. the two shots that are more spread apart were next and the next two were a little closer togeter. a couple of clicks left and that's where the last three landed. the last three measured .418'. not bad given the conditions. i need to go back out and soon, deer season is jst around the corner.

got a chance to go back out with the ol 270wsm. i thought that i had my load and so i loaded up 50 rounds of ammo with standard primers. my initial load development had been with mag primmers so i figured i would have no probs. with standards. well i guess the cups aren't as hard so i have gotten cratering on all, but no flattening. no big deal right; well 25 of 50 so far and i've had two split necks and 1 sticky extraction. TOO HOTT!!! so i'm gonna try 1 less grain and see what it does. i'm dead on at 100 and can hold dead on out to 200 easy only dropping about 2". 6" at 300 and 20" at 400. that's pretty flat. my groups opened up a bit, but still under 1moa. i'm guessing it's cuz my barrel wasnt' spotless. proly around 25 rnds thru it befor shooting this last time. plus the 16 i shot thru it today. cleaned it and i hope to try it out again soon. still kind of new to this round, but shooting once and only neck sizing the second time my cases were a tight fit. should i be fl sizing every time for this round? next batch will be the 3rd time and i did fl size those so we'll see what happens.

btw, i still dont own a chrony, but after running some figures over at JBM i figure i'm right at 3300fps. i'll be happy with 3150-3200fps if i can keep it shooting .5" and no signs of pressure. for those of you interested in getting one now, i would recommend a 7wsm. i hate to say it, but it's jst a tad bit better. it will beat out a 270wsm even with same powder charge and bullet weights.

The 7mmWSM has developed a positive reputation for a reason.  This is not to say the .270 version is not a good round but collectively, there has been much more research and development in the last 30 years dedicated to 7mm bullets and barrels than to .277.  High quality bullets and barrels are just so much more available in 7mm so unless one wants to "trail blaze", the 7mmWSM is just easier and more likely to end in success.

This comment may draw criticism, but it is my opinion that the .277 is headed more towards being a 'dead' caliber than a growing one.  The .270 Winchester is still likely to be the most popular in the caliber and it is generally considered to be a hunting only round.  Do not look for it to become more popular with time considering the number of marketed alternatives.  Rhetorically speaking, why build a .270 if you can build a .280, a 6.5x55, or a .30-06?  The same can be said for the .270WSM when the 7mmWSM, 6.5-284, and .300WSM are available.

Do not get me wrong.  I think the 8mm Mauser is a great round for many purposes, have a virgin 6.5mm-300WSM barrel I will probably never shoot, and these two rounds will likely never, ever be popular in this hemisphere. There are places where guys do not let friends shoot .270s though. ;D

While I love my 270 WSM, I'll agree that it doesn't seem to be gaining in popularity.  However, in my neck of the woods, I'd wager that 80% of the whitetail are killed with either a 270 Winchester or a 30-30.  The average hunter doesn't handload, and can buy 270 Win ammo at every country store.

If the 30-30 is still hanging in there, I don't believe that 270s are going anywhere.  They may never be used in competitions, but the majority of rifle owners and shooters in the U.S. have never heard of a 6BR, 6.5x284, or a 284 Shehane.

After Christmas I got the hankering for a 7mm WSM. So off I went to find one... Bass Pro, all the local gun shops and NO 7 WSM. Several 270 WSM but no 7's.

Most of the factory offerings are now in 270 WSM and NOT 7 WSM! Looks like 270 WSm is winning out.

SO....I picked one up in (270 WSM) in a Remington model 7 Whitetail. 100 rds down the tube and groups are only in the 1.25 to 1.5" range. Good enough for hunting, but this remmington barrel sucks.

It is a 22" barrel instead of 24"....It gives up a little velocity

Here are my loads:

150 grain Hornady SST, 61 gr RL19, 2830 FPS
150 grain Hornady SST, 71 gr Ramshot Magnum 2900 FPS

130 grain Sierra Game King, 61 gr  IMR4350 , 3100 FPS

I looked at a Sako today for my 14 year old but it is lighter than my Remmy... He may not be able to handle the recoil. The Model 7 is about all he wants as far as recoil. He shoots a few groups and then he is done.

Any magnum in a Model 7 is stretching it for a kid's first gun. I got my two guys an M7 .260 as a first deer gun and with moderate handloads, it was fine. I guess you could always cook up some tame handloads for him and then build up to full noise loads.

The 7wsm also has slightly larger powder capacity than the 270wsm. They shortened the neck and made the case body longer.
this was done to keep dummy's from putting a 7mm in a 270 chamber

the 130 scirocco IIs and 140 accubonds are perfect hunting bullets.  The 150 A-frames are also extremely effective.  All work well for me!
