Which type of scope base?
« on: 05:44 PM, 09/29/09 »
Should i go with Leupold dovetail or should i go with a weaver style?  Dont know which one is better.  I was thinking of EGW and some removable rings. Tell me what you think. Your opinion matters!

I like a leupold dual dovetail system for a light weight rigid platform.  Once you get the screws tight, they cannot go anywhere.  If you need a tapered base for longer shooting, I prefer a picitinny base and good rings, nightforce ultra light).

Which type of scope base?

Seems like I'm always swapping scopes from one rifle to the next, so for me, the Weaver bases are preferred, with the Burris Signature Zee rings. With these set-ups I'm able to leave the rings attached to the scope,s), remove the 2 crossbolts, slide them off and later back on without any sight-in/sight adjustment required. Several dedicated bench rifles have more than one scope,24x and 36x), so they can be quickly changed depending on light/mirage conditions. Walk-around varmint rifles also have more than one scope available. Also a quick fix when/if a scope fails & a replacement is needed, right away. Yes, I also have several of the Redfield/Leupold standard base mounts & for rifles that never see a scope change, they are a good choice: really like the windage adjustable base. So, guess the answer may be linked to your type of use.

Weaver style with 20MOA is my preferred and switching to on all my guns. I'd rather the scope be mechanically centered towards 600 yards than 100.

I believe EGW bases are a bargain! and wouldn't trade any of the 5 that I own & use for the higher $$$ bases.Great people to work with....

And because I'm terminally clumsy, they all carry Burris XTreme Tactical Rings.Which is the strongest I've found that I can afford!

Another vote for the EGW bases and Burris Signature rings....
It just no way gets any better than that....
Nightforce highly recommends you do not use Double Dovetail rings with their scopes, must be a reason for that, and off center is the main reason for that...
If you ream the rings once they are installed you'll probably be OK, but in the time it takes to do all that, you could of had the Burris rings in place and been off shooting.........

I move scopes from rifle to rifle.
I standardized on Weaver rails.
If I buy a rifle with Leupold mounts and rings, I take them off and throw them away.
If I buy a rifle with lapped Weaver rings, I take them off and throw them away.
If I buy a rifle with Ruger rings, I use them, begrudgingly.

for the money, EGW picatinny rails are great. I have 4 and all of them allow me to change 1 scope to any rifle (once mounted and sighted in) to any other gun with very little effort. And sight in time is hold tight, squeeze 1, hold back on and move the cross hairs to impact point.

personally,i am done with dovetail.I have changed scoped just a few times and the dovetail need to be twisted off to remove the base screws and they WILL loosen up after just a few times.
20MOA rail and my newest ring set is the burris xtreme tacticals rings.Really nice for the price
